Disney’s Live Action Films: The New Straight to DVD Sequels
Last week I discussed how Disney animation might just be on the brink of a new renaissance. And today I’m going to talk about the exact opposite of that.
Why? Because Maleficent.

Okay, so a couple of things happened this week in the land of Disneydom.
First, we got a teaser for a teaser for Big Hero Six…
Yeah, that was a little strange. Or just Disney taking advantage of an obsessed Disney culture where fans get all atwitter when a new trailer comes out. But I don’t do that at all…
Hey, did you guys know I had a blog?
I should probably write on that again.
Also I think I was doing some sort of series where I “re-view” all of the Disney animated films…?
Yeah. Sorry. Been away. I can only blame rabid panthers who destroyed my typing fingers.
That’s nerft true. I tyepe just fyneeee.
Whoops. Had a relapse. Back to the blogosphere!
So today we’re talking about Walt’s pet project Fantasia.
There’s a new Muppets movie coming out this weekend.
To celebrate, Mouse on the Mind and This Happy Place blog are theming their Kill/Marry/Refurb to Muppets!
Last night the world was given a new celebrity icon: Adele DaZeem.
It all started with a hostage situation. Hordes of little girls in tiaras begging their parents to let them stay up to watch Elsa sing. Disnerds everywhere tolerating odious acceptance speeches in a somewhat masturbatory self-congratulation ceremony for people who play pretend. A nation waiting with baited breath to hear the ice queen sing.
Recently, and by recently I mean earlier today, the main creators of Frozen – directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producer Peter del Vecho, and song writers Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson Lopez – sat down with the users of Reddit to answer fans’ questions. I love it when celebrities/artists do these “Ask Me Anythings.” It’s a really wonderful way to give something directly to the fans…and feed into their budding psychosis.
This movie is weird.
Like, really weird.
It’s not purposefully random like Alice in Wonderland or trippy like Dumbo, it’s just…strange.
[Magical Leah’s Note: Everyone please give a warm welcome to my very first guest poster, Ms. Katharine McCain!]
[WARNING: mild spoilers for Supernatural, Sherlock, and Doctor Who]
All princesses are girls, right?
Right??
Well, not necessarily.
In the emotional climax of Disney’s latest live action film Saving Mr. Banks, Walt Disney sits across from PL Travers over a cup of tea and whiskey and asks her to give him the rights to her beloved character, Mary Poppins. Travers is reluctant because the source material is very dear to her heart due to her complicated childhood, involving an alcoholic but much beloved father. So Walt appeals to her as a fellow storyteller.
“George Banks, and all he stands for, will be saved. Maybe not in life, but in imagination. Because that’s what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again.”
Why do I bring this up? Well, because I think it’s a good message for the controversy recently surrounding said film, mostly started by one Meryl Streep.
